We set off early for the Castlerigg Stone Circle.
We passed horses, cows, and sheep on our way.
Yet another way to get over a stone wall, and a bonus for people taking photos.
The largest stones were about 7 feet tall.
The largest Peter was about 6'2" tall.
More of the outer ring.
Peter synchronizing his watch to the stone clock.
The beautiful view from the circle's center.
200 feet closer than we'd get to the stones at Stonehenge.
The complete circle. It's really quite mysterious and sublime to be there.
These cows stopped to ask directions to the circle.
After the circle, we walked down to Keswick and boarded the Derwentwater Launch for a ride to the far side of the lake.
There were lots of small sail boats, kayaks, wind surfers, and others out on the water.
We disembarked at Hawes End, had a quick scone, then started up the trail over Cat Bells ridge.
Once we gained some elevation, we had fantastic views back toward Keswick.
This small bend in the trail is the closest thing to a switchback we saw the whole trip!
In the lower right of this photo is one of the boats that shuttles people (like us) around the lake.
This view looks to the west, away from Derwent Water.
Our campground is on the far shore of the lake, more or less above the island you see in the middle of the lake, just to the left of the dark green ridge that rises up on the right of the photo.
Scenic farmland and a windy road to the west.
The many switchbacks make this climb a cakewalk.
A closeup view of our campsite from the top of Skelgill Bank. Our tent is not quite visible, but is amongst the group of tents in the middle of the photo.
Looking up at Cat Bells summit. Ferns, blueberries and heather line the slopes.
Taking pictures is a nice excuse to take a break from climbing; this one looks back at Keswick, where we boarded the boat earlier (docks on lower right).
Looking west from near the top.
The German tourists were out in force with their rucksacks and walking sticks.
Little girls in pink hats were out in force too.
Finally at the top!
Looking generally southwest, almost in the direction of Scafell Pike (not quite visible from Cat Bells).
A scone with a view.
